Chapter Fourteen
July 1991
Ellery was in the midst of the busy season at the bed and breakfast, housing travelers who ventured into the mystical city. Most were regulars, returning every summer. One such guest was an elderly woman named Beverly Litman.
The retired school teacher liked to walk in the rose gardens in the back of the Victorian. Sometimes on hot nights sheâd sit on a wicker bench beside a Bailey Red bush, simply gazing at the summer sky. Sometimes she drifted to sleep, with a book open in her lap, and with her head tilted to the side. Ellery loved to watch her from her bedroom window, knowing that sheâd never live as long as Beverly, and she told herself that sheâd love to be like her; wise, abound with pure memories, and with a life well-lived.
But on that summer night black mist rose from the warm earth, smoky and smelling sweeter than the flowers, and, beneath the crescent moon and starry dark purple sky, it became a lovely woman dressed in black silkâMaraba.
She floated toward the sleeping woman, her hair and clothing shimmering as fire flies and sprites circled around her. Then she extended her clawed fingers, scooped up Beverly Litman and carried her away, floating higher and higher, until the womanâs book, shawl and bones cascaded, like rain, from the stygian sky.
Ellery shrieked, afraid that one day Maraba would inflict the same carnage on the ones that she loved ⦠and she whispered, âGeneva, please be safe, my girl.â
Others died that night, too. A college girl on her way home from a party, and a businessman jogging on the beach. Their bones turned to ashes when Maraba waved her handsâand those ashes floated away on the summer wind. The dead remained missing persons long after families reported that they hadnât come home, and despite intense investigations no one could find them ⦠because Marabaâs dark magic had taken them away forever.
